News this afternoon as the Kidnappers of Alhaji Mohammed Sani Idris, the Niger State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, have contacted his family and demanded a sum of N500 million as a ransom for his release.
Recall that gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia, numbering about ten, walking on foot invaded the home of Idris, the Commissioner, at Baban-Tunga in Tafa Local Government Area and kidnapped him at about 1 am on Sunday morning.
The presence of Sani Idris who joined about 238 other persons in the kidnappers’ den, including the 136 pupils of Islamiyya school Kontagora is said to have been celebrated by the kidnappers after ascertaining his status as a ‘government person’.
The Niger State Government is yet to issue an official statement on the worsening security situation in the state apart from the statement confirming the Commissioners’ kidnap issued by the office of the Secretary to State Government and that of the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.
Already, an enlarged security meeting is said to have been presided over by the state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Ketso at Government House which also has in attendance top security chiefs in the state.
While the armed bandits’ den is celebrating catching a top person, those in the government circle is sober as the absence of the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy is being felt even in the Minna Government House.
